At Willow Street Pictures, we’ve photographed cats in our Harleysville and West Lawn portrait studios, in clients’ homes and in places that have special meaning to the people who love them. Sometimes the finished portrait is of the cat alone. Very often, the portrait that becomes most meaningful is the one that includes the person who shares their life.

One of the biggest misconceptions about professional cat photography is that a cat needs to behave like a perfectly trained dog. Sit here. Look there. Stay still.

That’s not how we approach cats.

Some cats walk into one of our studios and immediately begin exploring. Others need a little time to decide whether any of us can be trusted. Some want to investigate the equipment. Some prefer staying close to their person.

We work with the cat in front of us.

That can mean giving them time to acclimate, keeping things quieter, allowing them to explore and watching for the little behaviors and expressions that make that particular cat recognizable to the people who know them best.

There is good reason for that approach. Feline behavior experts recognize that unfamiliar sights, sounds and environments can be stressful for cats and that interactions should be adapted to the individual animal.

Sometimes the Best Place Is Home

For some cats, visiting our Harleysville or West Lawn portrait studio works beautifully.

For others, home is where they’re most comfortable.

That’s one of the reasons Willow Street Pictures offers in-home cat photography.

Your cat already knows the sounds, smells, favorite hiding places and sunny spots in your home. They may have a particular chair they claim as their own, a window where they spend their afternoons or a favorite place beside you.

Rather than trying to separate the cat from those things, sometimes we use them.

And home can provide something else that’s valuable in a portrait: context.

Years from now, you may remember not only the cat you loved, but the chair they always slept on, the room where they waited for you or the place where the two of you spent countless ordinary days together.

Those ordinary details have a funny way of becoming important.

Our Harleysville and West Lawn studios give us tremendous creative control, but we don’t believe every meaningful portrait has to happen inside a photography studio.

Sometimes the right place is home.

Sometimes it’s outdoors.

Most Willow Street Pictures clients live within roughly an hour of one of our Pennsylvania studios, but we don’t draw a circle around a map and say meaningful stories have to happen inside it.

Anyone who has lived with cats knows that “cat personality” isn’t one thing.

Some are wonderfully dignified.

Some are curious about absolutely everything.

Some are affectionate. Some are independent. Some seem convinced they own the house and have simply allowed the humans to remain.

And some can move between all of those personalities before lunch.

The goal of a portrait isn’t to manufacture a personality that isn’t there.

Willow Street Pictures has two Pennsylvania portrait studios, one in Harleysville and another in West Lawn.

Our Harleysville studio welcomes clients from Montgomery County, the Main Line, Philadelphia and surrounding communities, while our West Lawn location serves families throughout Reading, Berks County and beyond.

But those are starting points, not boundaries.

If your cat is comfortable traveling, a studio can give us wonderful creative possibilities and a controlled environment designed around portrait making.

If your cat would be happier at home, we’ll talk about that.

The location should serve the portrait, not the other way around.

Cats are also one of the reasons we believe preparation and patience matter so much.

Feline behavior guidance emphasizes the importance of familiar surroundings, predictability and interactions tailored to the individual cat. That’s very much in keeping with the way we’ve learned to approach cat portrait experiences over the years.

We don’t need every cat to react the same way.

We need to pay attention to the one standing in front of us.
